Hello everyone,

How are you?  I hope you had a brilliant new year's celebration to start 2008 in the right fashion.  We certainly did, enjoying reruns of the Harry Potter movies and bottles of Martinelli's till midnight !
We are very happy to announce our 9th and LAST Annual Children's Benefit Concert, which will be on Sunday, February 10, 2008, at 2:00 pm at the Amador Theater in Pleasanton.  This year the focus of our concert will again be the street children's shelter in Can Tho, Vietnam, but we will also use the proceeds of the concert to expand our new college scholarship program in the Mekong Delta.  These are both projects we visited last summer on a three-week tour of southern Vietnam.
Last summer we had the opportunity to see firsthand the amazing work of the teachers at the street children shelter we have regularly sponsored in Can Tho in the past eight years.  We saw some of the kids I had met three years ago, and we met many of the approximately 100 new kids from the ages of 3 to 20 who had joined the shelter since the last time I had visited.  It was a heartwarming experience and a heartbreaking one when we left after only two short days of playing, laughing, and raucous picture-taking.
We were similarly warmly received when we visited several colleges in the Mekong Delta area and participated in discussions with college students who were past scholarship recipients.   We exchanged information about our respective cultures, families, dreams, and general daily lives and activities.  It was the first time I made friends and actually felt at home in my mother country.   In our three bustling and busy weeks in the country, I was wonderfully overwhelmed and inspired by my experiences.
This year, for our last event in the concert format, we have a fantastic program with classical and traditional Vietnamese performances by pianist Ellen Wassermann, clarinetist Bill Wohlmacher, violinist Phillip Santos, and world-renowned instrumentalist Van-Anh Vo.  We are so excited about our program, and of course we will also be performing on the piano.  It'll be your LAST CHANCE to catch these wonderful musicians in our concerts!
2008 will mark the tenth anniversary of our fundraising.
After this concert, we plan to expand their projects into a new phase.   Although 2008 is the last opportunity to attend the annual Children's Benefit Concert, you can expect to participate and contribute during campaigns of different formats in the coming years.  We'll keep you updated about these upcoming events.
Thank you for all of your support in the past year, and we hope that you will stay active in our circle of support.  We look forward to seeing you at the concert!
Below is a flier about the event.  We would appreciate it very much if you could pass this e-mail on to friends, colleagues, and family.
Please email us if you would like to purchase tickets in advance by mail.   Please write checks to Chi Nguyen for ticket purchases or to VNHELP for donations.

Fondly,
Chi Nguyen
