Fifth Annual Benefit Concert for Vietnam Youth

The Amador Theater will host an afternoon of music at the annual Children’s Benefit Concert on February 29, 2004 .  This will be the fifth consecutive year that this benefit concert has been held.  All proceeds will support children in need in Vietnam .  In addition to classical and jazz music, the concert features performances with various traditional Vietnamese instruments, including dan Tranh (sixteen-stringed zither), dan Bau (monochord), and dan Trung.  Van-Anh Vo, a Vietnamese dan Tranh National Champion, and her students will perform Vietnamese music. The other musicians in the concert are faculty from the music department at Cal State Hayward, including clarinetist and former Music Department Head Bill Wohlmacher and pianist Ellen Wassermann; members of San Francisco symphony; and the Just Friends jazz band.

Also performing on piano are the concert’s organizers: Chi Nguyen, a junior at California High School in San Ramon, and her sister Truc, a senior at Stanford University .  Since 1998, they have been raising money for their parents' homeland, Vietnam .  The two sisters have raised $25,000 by organizing four benefit concerts and by selling homemade almond toffee and Chi's personal collection of Beanie Babies.  These events have attracted wide support from Bay Area residents.  In the summer of 1999, during Chi and Truc’s first trip to Vietnam , they visited a street children’s shelter in Can Tho.  The children there touched them very deeply and inspired them to raise funds for programs benefiting street children.  The sisters’ goal with this concert is to help provide education to the children and to improve their quality of life.
